Yorkville, a fresh new musical offers great evening of theatre at Blyth

On Tuesday July 9, my friend Jane and I had the pleasure of watching Yorkville – the Musical at the Blyth Festival Theatre. The show was about two women from a small rural community trying to make a new life for themselves in the big city of Yorkville. They struggle to find out where they belong and what their new roles should be in the chaos of city life. They figure out quickly that finding a job is more difficult than they had originally thought. They have some help from an obnoxious, but well-meaning and hysterical neighbor. They even seem to find love along the way.
The show was directed by Donna Feore, music by Tom Szczesniak and the book and lyrics were by Carolyn Hay. The show made me laugh, and they definitely knew their audience. Some parts were absolutely hilarious! I was in awe at the musical talent, especially the voice of Stephanie Sy who plays Gabe. The dancing kept the energy level up and made me aspire to be that coordinated.
In my opinion, this show had all the necessary elements for an entertaining, and all around fantastic show. I loved that the content of the show was different from most of the shows I have seen on the Festival Stage. There was a good mixture of appreciation for Blyth’s rural roots and fresh subject matter.
