Berries and Breakfast

15 Jun

By Travel Diva Jenna Ujiye

On a quick trip to pick up home-made rhubarb muffins at the Bayfield Berry Farm, I took a peek around the store and also checked out the brunch! Owner Marlene, makes some of the best canned items, jams and jellies around, so I never seem to leave without picking up a few items. I picked out some red pepper jelly and pickled asparagus and then went over to the fresh picked items and got some asparagus and rhubarb.

While I was shopping the brunch was on, there was fresh fruit with whipped cream, eggs, sausage, toast and all of the fixings. There were many people in for the brunch and enjoying the great food. Bayfield Berry also offers catering, baked goods, gifts, u-pick berries (when available) and more. This year the crop was partially ruined due to late frost, but there should still be opportunities for picking.

The Bayfield Berry farm also has many functions going on in 2012:

Starting May 12th – October 7th, 2012 we are offering:

Saturday & Sunday Breakfast Buffets  8am – 2pm  – $10.95 (excluding special function dates below)

Holiday Mondays Breakfast Buffet 8am – 2pm – $10.95 (May 21-September 3)

**Please keep in mind that by popular demand we are serving our buffets & brunches first with menu orders possible thereafter**

So if you are looking for a great breakfast made with fresh local food visit this great spot on Orchard line.

Making the garden pretty

6 Jun

By Diva: Jenna Ujiye

While I was out last week I stopped in to Stonefield Garden Centre and Market LTD. (previously Te-Em Farms). I haven’t been in to a garden centre for quite a while, as my gardening abilities are quite lacking! I really wanted to grow some herbs and a couple of vegetables, so it made sense to take the quick trek to Bayfield and see what they had, especially since they had just opened!

This place has a huge variety of annuals, perennials, grasses, vegetable, herbs, water plants and of course nursery stock. The signage was really great, being a basic gardener I need the signs to tell me what plant it what! Now since I was looking for basil and dill I didn’t have any trouble finding it. I picked out what I wanted and started to leave, then I noticed some cool spikey grasses, so I picked them up as well!

If you are looking for a great garden centre with lots of options, friendly staff and gardening supplies, Stonefield Garden Centre is perfect for you! Oh and I forgot to mention… the fresh local produce part of their business! They sell Asparagus, Rhubarb, Strawberries, Raspberries, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Peppers, Sweet Corn, Gourds, Beans, Pumpkins and more. They had asparagus when I was there and mentioned that they will have strawberries, which is a huge delight as I had heard that many of the strawberry crops were almost wiped out due to the frost this spring!

Hello Blue Flag!

11 Jul

By: Diva Jenna Ujiye

We are so lucky here in Ontario’s West Coast to live in such a wonderful place. We have great food, excellent festivals and events, outdoor adventures galore and lots of shopping opportunities! A couple of weeks ago I was reading my RSS feeds and learned that Bayfield beach and marina where again awarded the Blue Flag. This program is something I had promoted in the past, but had never fully understood the value of the program.

When I read up on the program I found out that “The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to over 3650 beaches and marinas in 44 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean.” (www.blueflag.org) So out of 3650 beaches awarded the flag in the World, only 19 are in Canada and 5 of the are are on Lake Huron with two in Bayfield!

Bayfield Marina and Lake HuronBayfield Marina

Beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following:

1) Environmental Education and Information

2) Water Quality

3) Environmental Management

4) Safety and Services
All Blue Flags are awarded for one season at a time.

In the end all I have to say again, is that anyone living in the area should feel really lucky to have so many amazing opportunities!

Red Pump re-opens

20 Apr

Hello world, This post is for all the serious foodies out there! As of today, the Red Pump on Main street in Bayfield, has officially opened for the season!!!! The Red Pump is one of my absolute favourite restaurants of all time! OK before I get too excited and start talking about the food I will focus on the hours of operation. Tonight they are open for dinner and for the rest of the week they will be open for lunch and dinner. The Pump will close down Monday and Tuesday and the open again Wednesday lunch and dinner right through until Sunday. Those hours will continue every week until sometime in June as far as I know.

All right, back to the fun stuff, let me just start telling you about the Red Pump. The food is honestly amazing! This is more of a fine dining place; however the money you spend is worth every single penny! It is not one of those fancy restaurants where you leave still feeling hungry, believe me you will be satisfied after your meal!

Another great thing about the pump is the lunch menu. It is perfect and actually fairly inexpensive! AAAANNND if you are a fan of wine, like myself, they have so many amazing wines to choose from! I highly recommend people check out the Red Pump, I have never once had anything but amazing meals and experiences there!

I will be at the Pump tomorrow night trying out the new menu! I will post pics and let you know how delicious everything was!
