SEAFORTH – I have always found it interesting how quickly things can transpire once the wheels have been put into motion.

This past Saturday was the 1st Annual MILPS Gala in Seaforth, hosted by the Huron East Centenaires. What began as an informal conversation after the Men’s Steak Night last summer quickly turned into a full-on planning session for a fun- filled ladies’ night in Seaforth. The gala was to focus not only on raising funds for the newly formed Men’s Senior AA hockey team and local youth sports initiatives, but also provide a showcase for some of the local bounty that Huron County has to offer. In a few short months it went from a vague idea and discussion to a sold-out event with 200 women filling the Seaforth & District Community Centre.

The MILPS Gala (which stands for Mom’s I’d Like to Party with) is not the first ladies’ night to hit Huron County (the Clinton Kinsmen has an incredibly successful one in November!), and it is with a respect for the existing events that we began the planning process.

The event featured local musician Jay Allan (who blew the audience away with his acoustic talents!), catering by Walton’s own Teresa Dejong and High Creek Farm, fashion show curated by high-end consignment boutique Scarlet in Exeter and the only non-local talent, hypnotist-comedian Hank Stone.  Local partnerships were also formed with Blyth Farm Cheese and 16 Mile Cellar Winery (local businessman Paul Vandermolen of Lawnmaster is a partner), Shop Bike Coffee Roasters, Blooms ‘n’ Rooms and Your Life In Stills Photography with Rob Boyce.  On top of the entertainment, thanks to the generosity of local merchants there were over 16 door prizes ranging in value from $50 to $430, and 35 silent auction items to bid on.  The evening ended with a jam-packed dance floor, with DJ Jake Campbell (JCMBL) taking over the stage.  Throughout the evening, the Ex-Cents (a senior men’s league hockey team) formed a squad of concierges that waited on each table hand and foot, fetching drinks, serving the plated meals and laughing at all of the ladies’ clever jokes.

It was an incredibly fun evening, and exceeded all of our expectations when planning.  And while I may have been one of the event coordinators for the Gala, this is not meant to be a “toot my own horn” blog posting.  As an import to Seaforth and Huron County, Saturday night exemplified beyond words how much I love this town and the surrounding area.  I feel more at home here than I have in any other location (be it from the shores of lakes Erie, Ontario and Superior, to further northwest in a secluded little town called Atikokan), and it’s not just due to the fact that I have my own little family here.  It is, for the most, part due the people.  The area is full of amazing people who will help out at the drop of a hat, who are supportive and full of excitement and want nothing more than to see an idea succeed into fruition. Over time, they become an extended family that you never knew you needed, but are incredibly thankful to have.

Toronto may have its thousands of restaurants, clubs and subway system…but I know Huron County has more.  And I know for sure we are the only area to have our own MILPS Gala 😉

Fighting over the Oscar

Fighting over the Oscar

By: Diva Jenna Ujiye

I have not watched the Academy Awards in about 6 years, as I haven’t had cable and I usually spend my Sunday evenings at home! This year my friend Kate Johnston, who is the manager of the Livery in Goderich, mentioned to me that there was a Livery fundraiser Oscar Night at the Parkhouse in Goderich and that it was a formal dress-up night. If you haven’t noticed, I hate to miss out on getting dressed up, so I told her I would be there!Oscar party decor at the Parkhouse in GoderichOscar party decor at the Parkhouse in Goderich

I realized that all I had for formal wear were my prom dresses and a couple of other dresses that were very tight. So I went with the larger of the tight dresses! I arrived at the Parkhouse at around 7:30 and our Hosts Ben Scholton and Ian Doyle had already started the evening commentary. I really felt like a star myself! The ticket price of $15.00 included a glass of sparkling wine, tons of door prizes and ½ price appetizers. I hadn’t had dinner, so I ordered a BLTC (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Cheese) sandwhich… I know it doesn’t sound glamourous, but it sure hit the spot for me!

We were each given ballots to put our votes in on all of the awards. I had seen 4 of the movies, so I had to do some “educated” guesses. There were prizes for best dressed, male and female and of course a prize was given to the person who scored highest on the awards list. The awards were fun, but I would have to say my favourite part was the photo booth. As you can see from the pictures we had a lot of fun! I hope the Livery has more entertaining nights such as these and it was great to spend the night with friends at the Parkhouse!

The Livery hosts the Goderich Little Theatre, The Livery Film Fest and Live! at the Livery. If you are looking to see a great theatre production, one is starting on March 15. I’ll Be Back Back Before Midnight” Written by Peter Colley and Directed by Nina Reynolds, sounds to me like it is going to be a great murder mystery show! Taste of Huron is over :(

13 Sep

Hello all!!!

Alright so just this past weekend, Taste of Huron came to an end… I had mixed feelings about this. I was slightly saddened. For two weeks I ate the best food that Huron County had to offer. A minimum of three courses, all which included a fantastic dessert! I ate at the Blyth Inn, the Black Dog, the Little Inn, Eddingtons, Hessenland, the Fireside Cafe and finally I finished the Taste of Huron of with the Gala. All the restaurants were so fantastic and I enjoyed them all.

I am however feeling a slight sense of relief.. I ate soooo much in the last two weeks, I wont lie to you. I may have gained a few pounds, but it was totally  worth it!

I will provide a short slideshow of just a few of the delicious things I was able to consume ..

Jealous?

YOU SHOULD BE! that was only about a quarter of what I got to eat! But no worries my friends, the Taste of Huron is an annual event and now you KNOW that you MUST come and attend Taste of Huron next year!

Foodie Favourite – 5 courses paired with 5 Ontario Wines

13 Aug

By: Diva Jenna Ujiye

I’m sure you have checked out the Taste of Huron website, but I thought I should tell you more about the Gala!

The Gala dinner is my all time favourite part of the 2 week long event. 5 courses, paired with 5 Pelee Island wines, plus an Amuse Bouche (One perfect bite appetizer) plus there is a shuttle from both Goderich and Bayfield, so you don’t need a designated driver from those two towns! This year the menu sounds absolutely scrumptious! Of course almost all of the food is locally sourced and prepared by local chefs. This is a one time per year opportunity to have a few local chefs working together to prepare a meal for you! On top of everything, we have great music playing during the evening. Andy McGuire is going to be performing in between courses. Andy just released his second album “Body of Work”, take a listen to his music at www.andymcguire.ca Check out the Gala menu below!

$100 for one meal probably does sound like quite a bit of money, but they way I look at it is that it would cost much more to order 5 courses and wine at a regular fine dining restaurant. If you really don’t think that this dinner is affordable for you, of course there are other opportunities! We have 7 Food For Thought Dinners (3 courses for $40), 2 Locavore Lunch and Learns (2 courses for $20), the Locavore Brunch N’Blues ($20 for a local fare breakfast and a blues concert) and the Tasty Blues Cafe ($10), oh and you might get a bit of food for free if you head to the Chef Challenge, where local chefs and Top Chef Canada chefs Rob Rossi and Andrea Nicholson will be participating!

I know… I am a relentless promoter, but its not because it is part of my job… I really believe in the things that I write about and I always speak the truth about the experiences! If you get the chance, head out to the Taste of Huron!
