Winter Cottages in Huron

A Great time at the Cottage

by Diva Jenna

A typical summer experience in Huron is heading up to the cottage for a long weekend or week long vacation. Last weekend my friend rented a cottage for a winter wonderland escape. I’m sure many of you don’t think of cottaging in the winter, but many of these accommodations are available all year round!

Many of the people coming up for the weekend were from Toronto, so we all got there around 10pm on the Friday night. We had a few leisurely drinks and snacks and played some card games. The next day we had decided on winter fun activities including hiking/snowshoeing along the beach, tobogganing and general snow play!

I had to head out to meet some other friends for dinner in Bayfield, but the rest of the vacationers went to Shannahans Quality meats in Goderich and go a huge Metzgers beef loin in which they roasted for dinner!

winttercottage-snowangelWhat a great time we had! It reminded me of being a kid again. If you are looking to rent a cottage or accommodation in winter on Ontario’s West Coast, here is a link to all of the options! http://www.ontarioswestcoast.ca/owc_directory/rental.php

I’m headin’ for breakfast!

11 Aug

By: Diva Jenna Ujiye

August 13, 2011 marks the annual “Breakfast in the Park” in St. Josephs. I have never been to this event and plan to head for some good food and a bit of “Garage Sailing”, as my mom would call it! Not only is it the St.Josephs breakfast, but it is also the Zurich Town Yard Sale and Firemans breakfast. My plan is as follows:

  1. Head to St.Josephs, be there for 7am
  2. Take in the heritage of the tiny village
  3. Eat breakfast (#1)
  4. Head to Zurich, shop and explore (find some treasure)
  5. Eat breakfast (#2)

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, so I don’t mind eating two of the at all! I think this adventure will be quite interesting, the people of the town seem to have quite the sense of humour! When I was looking up information on the the Zurich event, both the town website and the Fire Department had funny jokes on them. Here is the one from the fire department page:

Don’t let this happen to you!

Be sure to park AWAY from the fire hydrants!  Remember, it’s the law…

Time for a campfire and s’mores

8 Jul

By: Diva Jenna Ujiye

Marshmallows have never been a favourite snack of mine, but s’mores on the other hand are something that I have always enjoyed. They bring back memories from my childhood and even in to my teen years. You really can’t have a campfire without s’mores and spider dogs in my opinion!

I want S'more!!!Loving my s'moreA few days ago, we decided to have an evening campfire. It was our first of the summer, so I got out the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate, within minutes we were eating our campfire favourite and having a blast!

As you can see from the pictures, it wasn’t even dark yet, but the fire was nice and hot and perfect for marshmallow roasting!

I have also come across some gourmet recipes, so I thought I would post them here! ENJOY!

I would say that spending time with family on the Shores of Lake Huron is the best summer beach vacation ever. Plus you can always have a great campfire!

Chocolate and Peanut Butter S’mores

from – http://www.sunset.com/food-wine/kitchen-assistant/new-smores-recipes-00400000043561/

Anyone who’s outgrown classic s’mores will love this version: gooey-sweet melted marshmallow tempered by bittersweet chocolate cookies and salty roasted peanuts.

Spread 1 tablespoon peanut butter (at room temperature, for easy spreading) onto a thin, crisp chocolate water (such as Nabisco Famous Chocolate Waters).

Slide 1 skewer-toasted marshmallow onto peanut butter. Top with a second wafer and squish down gently. Eat, licking fingers.

Campgrounds galore!

27 May

Playing at Shelter Valley

Ontario’s West Coast is known for it’s wonderful Countryside and Coastline, but who knew that we had 26 amazing campgrounds in the area?

When I was a kid my parents had a trailer and we spent every weekend at it in the summer time! I will never forget those cherished moments. Campgrounds always have really great events and activities going on.

This past weekend I stopped by to visit Laurie and Bert at Shelter Valley Campground, where my friend Adrienne was staying with her husband and daughter. Shelter Valley is located, on Highway 8 in between Clinton and Goderich. Of course, since it was May 24 weekend the campground was filled to capacity!  When I first got to the campground I walked round and checked out the river. The water was really high, perfect for canoeing or kayaking, we watched at least 10 people paddle by effortlessly. After that we went for a walk and played on the equipment, walked up the hiking path and then had a wonderful barbecue. “Chef Mike” (Adriennes’s Husband) made awesome burger and Adrienne got the salads ready. since it was a long weekend, fieworks were planned for dusk. Bert and crew put on an awesome 45 minute show!

I can’t wait to get out again, you can’t really say that I went camping, since I went home that night. I do plan on getting out this summer though! If you are single or with a group, camping is always a blast. Since activities are planned you will always meet interesting people from all over the place. If you are looking to camp this summer, check out http://www.ontarioswestcoast.ca/owc_directory/campground_rv.php to pick your favourite place!

A visitor from Banff – Part 3

25 May

Marie grew up on a farm in Quebec where she learned to ride four wheelers and other farm girl fun stuff! She really wanted me to take her out on the four wheelers, so I asked Taylor to get them ready. We went on a quick 2 hour ride and boy could Marie ride! As soon as Marie got on the Honda EX 450, she broke something… I am not mechnical, so I thought our day was done. Marie seemed to know what was broken and said that if we just push started her, she would be able to keep going as long as the bike didn’t stall out. Check out the video and photos below:

On our final day, we didn’t have much time to do anything, but it was the most beautiful spring day, I thought we should try to get to the beach for lunch! I had meetings most of the day, so we made it quick. It was the best first beach lunch in a long time!

A visitor from Banff – Part 2

24 May

On Tuesday we had a lunch meeting with Kaylie in Exeter. Marie wanted to see the area, so I wanted to make sure we drove through most of the County! We had already toured through Gorrie, Wroxeter, Wingham, Lucknow, Dungannon, Port Albert and Goderich, so Exeter was a perfect place to go.

When we got to Exeter the owner of Eddingtons, James, came out and chatted with us about a few things, including the Taste of Huron event! Kaylie already posted about our wonderful meal, but I thought I would add some more pictures of the food! Marie is quite the foodie and she loves to try different things, she mentioned that she even once ate Guinea Pig! I’ve never really eaten a rodent, but I guarenteed her that this meal would be better!

After our awesome meal at Eddington’s, we decided to try and find a White Squirrel. Exeter is known for their white squirrels and we hoped they wouldn’t be too hard to find! As luck would have it, as soon as we exited Edingtons, we spotted one, but didn’t have the good camera to get a close up. So we ran to the vehicle and followed the squirrel around the block!

White Squirrel

Our next destination was Hayter’s Turkey in Dashwood Ontario! I try to make it to the Hayter’s turkey store once a month… it is literally a one stop shop for turkey products. They have the turkey’s right on site, you can buy everything from whole turkey’s, soups, gravies, breasts, sausages and more. They also have a liquor store and local food products right on site. We bought a tonne of food and had a wonderful experience. They will even pack frozen foods in cardboard with ice so that it doesn’t thaw on it’s own! My favourite treat from Hayters is the pepperettes.

On the way home, we decided to stop in to Bayfield for a bit of shopping and a refreshing drink. Some of the stores weren’t open yet, but we still made a couple of purchases downtown! As you see from the photos, we had fun at the Copenhagens ice cream cone and our friend Becca at the Albion served us a refreshing beverage!
